Guidance for Student Org Leaders

We know that this is an unprecedented and uncertain time for your student organizations, and we want to do our best to offer support and resources as you navigate leading your respective organizations.

The Center for Campus Involvement is doing our best to respond to guidance from university, state, and federal leadership as we receive it, but we understand that there will likely be a need for adjustments to planned student organization programs and events for August 2020 and beyond. Please consider the following guidance around event and program planning for student organizations:

  1. Explore a variety of options and contingencies. We recommend considering:

    • A version of your event(s)/program(s) that incorporates strict social distancing guidelines

    • A fully virtual/remote version of your event/program

    • The possibility of postponing your event/program

  2. Stay tuned to the University, state, and federal government updates on policies for large gatherings.

  3. Be in constant communication with your advisor or other stakeholders/mentors regarding your planning process - they may be able to provide valuable information and guidance!

  4. Consult with Student Organization Account Services (SOAS) about funding and use of student organization account money. CCI is available to consult about entertainment contracts or other student organization funding concerns. Also, begin or continue to engage in conversations with your vendors/service-providers about flexibility within contracts for cancellations due to COVID-19.

  5. If you have already made commitments to specific venues, make sure you explore their policies around event cancellations - every venue is a bit different, so take the time to find their policies, or reach out to one of their representatives if you cannot find it on your own!

More information and resources will be shared directly with authorized signers and on the CCI website in the coming weeks/months. If you are interested in connecting virtually with a staff member, please contact us at uminvolvement@umich.edu and we will set up a time to chat!
