SSOs are covered by the University’s insurance. If there is an incident that results in a loss that the University must pay, the University will investigate if your unit did everything reasonable to avoid the loss. If there is some action that your unit should have taken, your unit may be responsible for paying the full or partial amount of the loss.
If the SSO engages in activities that your department would not support, it is the role of the sponsor to represent the University’s best interest. You may have to tell an organization “No.” For instance, consider the possibility that an organization wants to take a skydiving trip. Would the University cover this? If the answer is no, then the SSO should not engage in that activity.
