How and where to get tables and chairs
Tables & Chairs from SORC
The Student Organization Resource Center (SORC, pronounced "source") offers SIX 6-foot tables, TWO 4-foot tables, and SEVEN folding chairs for student organization and department rentals. Events can happen indoors or out, on campus or within a mile of campus, but must be sponsored by a UM department or student organization.
These items are available 7 days a week, whenever the Michigan League is open (7am-2am most days). First, check availability of tables and chairs: Click this link to view SORC Table/Chair availability calendar
If items are available on the day and time you need them, you may complete a contract one of two ways:
- Visit the SORC in person, located in the Michigan League Underground. Authorized signer approval is required. Once approved, you may take the items immediately.
- Submit an online request at least one business day before you need the items. Authorized signer approval is required.

Tables & Chairs from LSA-Student Government
SORC tables are sometimes fully booked. Another option for student organizations is to use tables and chairs provided by LSA-Student Government for FREE! Student organizations can request items by visiting this link. LSA-SG lends 7 tables and about a dozen chairs per day Monday-Friday 10AM-4PM. Click here for more information about LSA-SG. How to request/reserve popular spaces for tabling
Any Maize Pages registered student organization seeking approval to hold an event on the Diag should begin by reading the policies and completing an online request form. There is no fee for the use of the space unless you have special needs such as electricity, amplification, etc. Policies related to the use of amplified sound, food/beverages, grilling, vehicles, electrical needs, table rental, etc. will be shared at the time of the request. For more information regarding the use of the Diag or other related questions, please visit this page or email email@example.com. Tables and chairs are not provided when you reserve the Diag; you can rent them from SORC or LSA-SG.
The Gerstacker Grove (North Campus Diag):
Any Maize Pages registered student organization seeking approval to hold an event on the Grove should begin by reading the policies and completing an online request form. There is no fee for the use of the space unless you have special needs such as electricity, amplification, etc. Policies related to the use of amplified sound, food/beverages, grilling, vehicles, electrical needs, table rental, etc. will be shared at the time of the request. For more information regarding the use of the Grove or other related questions, please visit the page above or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Tables and chairs are not provided when you reserve the Grove; you can rent them from SORC or LSA-SG or an outside rental agency.
Other Outdoor Campus Spaces:
Any Maize Pages registered student organization seeking approval to hold an event on campus in locations other than the Diag should submit this space request form. Tables and chairs are not provided when you reserve outdoor campus spaces; you can rent them from SORC or LSA-SG or an outside rental agency.
Posting Wall at Angell Hall, Chemistry Atrium, and East Hall Atrium:
You must obtain permission from LSA Facilities prior to reserving the tables or chairs for use in Angell Hall or the Chemistry Atrium. There is no charge for the use of the space at the Posting Wall or Chemistry Atrium. The East Hall Atrium is available for events (there is a charge) but not for setting up tables and chairs to promote your organization. Request space online at: Space reservation process for LSA Facilities. Tables and chairs are generally not provided when you reserve these areas; you can rent them from SORC or LSA-SG.
You may reserve space on the Ground floor of the Michigan Union to promote your event. There is a fee for using this space, but it is substantially discounted for student organizations. To reserve space, visit the University Unions Event Services website or stop by Event Services at 1310 Michigan Union. You may also call 734-764-2000 for more information. A 4-foot table and two chairs are provided when you reserve this space. Do not rent tables from SORC, because you won't need them!
Other LSA Classrooms/Auditoriums:
You must obtain permission from SOAS prior to reserving the tables or chairs for use in LSA classrooms and auditoriums not listed above. Contact SOAS at 2400 Michigan Union, email@example.com, or call 734-763-5767. Download the room request forms here. Existing tables, chairs, and desks are included when you reserve LSA classrooms / auditoriums.
Classrooms in non-LSA buildings:
Contact the Administrative Office for that specific college/school. SORC tables can be used in any campus building, but before you sign a SORC contract, inquire at the building as to whether there will be tables and chairs there for you to use.

Pick up & delivery
You pick up the tables and/or chairs yourself any time that the SORC is open. As of 9/18/19, all table/chair rentals must be picked up and returned during SORC business hours. If you have a weekend event, you will need to pick them up between 5PM-6PM on Friday and return them on Monday. You will be charged for 2 days' rental. You may not return items when SORC is closed, so you will have to hold onto them until Monday. The tables are slightly cumbersome because of their size, but they are very lightweight. An average-sized person can usually manage two tables (or one table and two chairs). SORC does not offer delivery of tables or chairs.
Cleaning / Replacement Cost
Your group is responsible for returning tables and chairs to SORC clean and unharmed. Misuse may result in additional charges for necessary cleaning or replacement. When you sign a contract to rent a table and/or chairs from SORC, you agree to return the items in thier original condition to SORC or pay the applicable cleaning or replacement costs.
In most cases you can pick up tables or chairs with little or no notice. However, during the warm months, these items are higher in demand, and may be booked in advance (hence, unavailable). In order to use these items, an authorized signer for your group must authorize the contract. This can be done via email, but must be done before you leave with the items. Table and chair rentals must be paid via SOAS funds.
If you need more tables and chairs than SORC is able to provide, we recommend Delux Tents & Events, Sunbelt Rentals or A-1 Rental. Allof these companies are local but are not within walking distance. You will need to either have a large vehicle to pick up the items, or you will have to pay the company to deliver them. Their prices are roughly the same, although you might see differences in delivery costs.
